Teaching Philosophy Video

"Music is more than an art form to me. it is a way of life and a discipline that shapes character. It has given me perspective, allowing me to see beauty and meaning even in chaos, and it has been central to who I am today.** My musical journey began in community college, where I joined ensembles such as a pop a cappella group, chamber choir, vocal jazz, classical solo performance, and eventually a renowned choir. These experiences taught me far more than technical musicianship; they revealed that authentic music-making comes from the performer’s character, genuineness, and willingness to take risks. In the curriculum I aim to create, students will develop strong musicianship skills, from Curwen hand signs to part independence, while also having the freedom to explore any genre or musical interest that inspires them. My priority is to create space for creativity by guiding students toward meaningful resources and supporting their individual passions. Students in my classroom will gain more than musical skill. They will leave with lasting memories, friendships, and experiences that shape their character and worldview. Through culturally relevant repertoire, community-centered rehearsals, and performances rooted in students’ identities, I strive to build a learning environment where all students feel safe, welcome, and deeply connected to the music. In this environment, students practice critical thinking, reflection, problem-solving, compassion, initiative, and peer-to-peer collaboration skills that carry well beyond the classroom. I believe the value of music education lies in its ability to foster creativity, build community, and connect students to authentic human emotions such as joy, sadness, compassion, and empowerment. *All students deserve the opportunity for creativity supported by a culturally responsive, equity-driven environment and an education that is both firm and nurturing.
